Nithsdale makes up approximately one quarter of the total area of Dumfries and Galloway. It is a diverse locality containing rural areas, smaller towns and villages and Dumfries, the region’s largest town.

59,217 people live in Nithsdale which is 39% of the whole population of Dumfries and Galloway.

By 2037 we expect:

  • 1 in 3 people to be aged over 65 years instead of 1 in 5 currently
  • The number of 85 year olds to double
  • Over 4300 people aged 65 and over to live alone
  • The number of 15 to 64 year olds to have declined by 25%

We are changing how we deliver health and social care to support people to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. We are developing new ways of working which support people to take greater control of their own health and well-being and move away from the more traditional way of fixing problems on behalf of people. For example, our Healthy Connections service and Health & Social Care Hub (see below).

Meet the Services and Staff

Alison Solley, Locality ManagerAlison


Alison Solley is the Health and Social Care Partnership’s Locality Manager in Nithsdale, responsible for taking forward health and social care in the area, shaping local services to meet the needs of individuals in their communities.

Nithsdale In Partnership

Nithsdale in Partnership is a new rapid response Assessment at Home Service for people who live in (and are registered with a GP Practice in) the DG1 and DG2 postcode areas.

Working with GPs, community based colleagues and the acute hospital, the aim of the service is to assess a person within their own home, agree a plan with the person and enact support for a period of up to 72 hours. This in turn will:

  • Help support people at a point of crisis
  • Help avoid unnecessary admission to hospital
  • Facilitate earlier supported discharge from hospital

Currently the Assessment at Home team consists of Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Community Nursing and Social Services. They work with partner services in order to provide individuals with a seamless service to support their needs e.g. GPs, telecare, Social Work Services; Reablement Service; Optimise Pharmacy   Review; Community Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy; Mental Health Teams; Healthy Connections; Third Sector; Community Rehab,  wider community nursing teams  and others.

The rapid response service is one part of a wider ‘one team’ approach working closely with GP practices and a range of professionals to offer a more holistic approach to   supporting people through  pro-active prevention and reablement and to help people stay in good health for longer.

Healthy Connections

This service supports individuals to connect to activities and organisations to help improve wellbeing. Lifestyle advice is also offered, covering various topics such as weight and keeping active.

It is very important for people to feel happy and content in their lives. Different events throughout life can make people feel low and isolated. Healthy Connections works closely with individuals to encourage involvement in meaningful activities that will help people to feel better in themselves.

By connecting people with various activities, Healthy Connections aims to increase levels of social contact and social support. Some of the local services we work closely with are Food Train, Men’s Shed, Dumfries Diabetes Support Group and Incredible Edibles.

A wide variety of activities may be accessed such as health walks, writing groups, exercise sessions and advice and support from various agencies. Many other groups may also be accessed; the support provided is individualised.

Anyone can become involved, and following contact with a designated link worker, individuals will be signposted and often accompanied to various activities that best support their needs.

Living at Home with Dementia

Being diagnosed with a memory  impairment does not mean your lifestyle has to change dramatically. Sanny is in his 80’s, has Vascular Dementia and continues to live in his own home.

Sanny was born in Aberdeen and was one of seven siblings. He married his wife Ella in 1955 and has lived in Upper Nithsdale for 40 years.

To support his independence at home, he has  various health and social care services in place. He has home carers daily, who help with personal care, clothes washing and with heating meals.  Physiotherapy for issues with his shoulder and he does his exercises daily. He also receives a daily visit from the nurse for his diabetes medication.

His home is two-story, however, he is now unable to access the upper level due to reduced mobility. His bed has been moved  downstairs to accommodate for this. To get around, he uses a wheeled walker and has sticks.

His niece Diane is his family carer, she is very supportive and an important part of his life. She helps around the house, cooking meals, deals with his finances and spends hours each week providing social company.

Diane ensures that Sanny is included in planning his care and encourages his independence as much as possible. For example, although she shops for him, he advises what he would like on his shopping list.   He is also     included in review meetings with health and social care staff with regards to his own care planning.

Central Heating System

Mr and Mrs Clarke are both in their 90s and have lived in their detached, pre-fabricated bungalow for the past 30 years having chosen the property as their retirement home. The bungalow was heated by a back boiler and coal fire. In June 2015, their chimney sweep Simon Llewellyn of AbleSweep was carrying out a routine clean of the chimney when he noticed that the back boiler was leaking. He condemned the boiler and, having concerns for his clients’ welfare with no heating and limited hot water, contacted Andy Todman, Care & Repair Manager for Dumfries & Galloway.

Andy then referred the case to Lucy Brown, Community Liaison Officer of Home Energy Scotland (HES), to carry out a visit and assess if HES could provide any assistance. The visit was carried out promptly and Lucy determined the couple required urgent assistance and should be treated as an Occupational Therapy (OT) referral as opposed to waiting for the new tranche of HES funding to be released in September.

The formal OT referral was received by Care & Repair in July. In discussion with the Clarkes, it was agreed that the coal fire needed to be removed and an electric heating system installed to replace it. The works were instructed to a local firm in September and completed in October, just 4 months after the chimney sweep’s initial visit.

Both Mr and Mrs Clarke are delighted with their new electric Rointe heating system and are finding it much easier and cleaner to use than their former coal fire. The works were completed within 1 day and the installer visited again a few days later to ensure all was working correctly.

Additionally, education on gel application was limited, leaving nail techs in the dark about the product, and home-use ­systems were introduced around the same time, damaging the reputation of salon-use systems by ­association.Nail care

Thanks to promotional partnership work through The Hub – your Community Action Centre’s Winter Warmth for Older People Project, the chimney sweep was aware of Care & Repair and was able to make the referral. Had this not been done, Mr and Mrs Clarke may have waited some time before any assistance was forthcoming. As it was, this case demonstrates exemplar inter-agency working with involvement and coordination from AbleSweep, Home Energy Scotland, the Occupational Therapy Service, Care & Repair and the local contractor.

Internally, this google maps mashup computes the latitude and longitude of the point under the marker and then uses the youtube database to find geo-tagged videos that are within a 2 mile radius of resume writing services that point.
